Passengers Flying Into Vienna Can Get Tested for Coronavirus Right in the Airport (Video)

Passengers flying into Austria can now get tested for COVID-19 upon arrival, potentially bypassing the country’s two-week mandatory quarantine.

This week, Vienna International Airport started offering the tests for arriving passengers as well as other customers who wanted one. The molecular-biological COVID-19 testing (PCR) is conducted using a throat or nose swab with results ready in about three hours, according to the airport.

Currently, the airport said arriving passengers are required to either quarantine for 14 days or carry a certificate of a negative test taken within at least four days. If passengers test negative upon arrival, they will not have to complete the self-quarantine. If someone tests positive, the airport said those results are reported to public authorities.

Passengers can either pick up their results in person or have them sent to them, the airport noted. Tests are being conducted as a private service and cost €190, or just over $204, to complete.

The Vienna airport has made significant changes to operations in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Flights have been reduced and, as a result, have been consolidated to its Terminal 3. In addition, people are required to wear face masks throughout the terminal.

Many airports around the world have also adopted different cleaning or social distancing measures to prevent the spread of the virus. In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong International Airport is testing a new full-body disinfectant machine, and in the U.K, London's Heathrow Airport has consolidated flights to certain terminals and blocked off seats to passengers in the terminal.

Additionally, in Dubai, Emirates started testing passengers boarding certain flights using a rapid blood test in the terminal that yields results in 10 minutes.

The idea of wearing face masks has also become popular amongst airlines as a way to combat the spread of the virus. U.S. carriers JetBlue, Delta, and United Airlines have all adopted it as a mandatory measure.
